A plan shaped around you

Thoughtful assessment

An assessment is a chance to understand your situation before suggesting a plan. It starts with your concerns, your everyday goals and the information that helps a physiotherapist decide what can be assessed safely.

Understand how a physiotherapy assessment considers your concerns, everyday goals, relevant medical history and safe movement before discussing an individual plan.

Start with what matters to you

Describe when the concern started, what makes movement difficult and which activities you would like to work towards. The physiotherapist may ask about previous injuries or operations, relevant health conditions, current medical advice and any reports you have. You do not need to diagnose yourself or choose a treatment package before asking for help.

  • Explain symptoms and changes in everyday function in your own words.
  • Discuss goals such as comfortable movement, safer transfers or greater independence.
  • Share relevant medical advice, restrictions and support available at home.

Movement is considered safely and individually

Depending on your situation, assessment may include looking at comfortable movement, how you manage everyday tasks and the support you need. You can ask why a movement is being suggested, describe discomfort or decline an activity. A video assessment has limitations and cannot replace every hands-on examination.

Agree a useful next step

The discussion can help identify suitable goals, an initial approach and whether home care, a video consultation or further medical assessment is appropriate. A plan may change as your needs and response change. The number of sessions and recovery time cannot be guaranteed from an initial website enquiry.

Before you begin

A little preparation can help.

Bring only what is useful to the conversation. You can ask questions and take things at a pace that feels comfortable.

  1. Note your main concern, when it started and the activities affected.

  2. Keep relevant medical reports and your doctor’s instructions available.

  3. Write down questions about the proposed plan, exercise suitability or practical arrangements.

  4. Mention any recent worsening, falls or difficulties that may affect safe assessment.

Good to know

Questions families often ask.

Will I receive a fixed exercise routine before an assessment?

No. Movement suggestions should reflect your situation. Website illustrations and general information are not an individual exercise prescription.

What if physiotherapy is not the right first step?

Ask about the appropriate next step. Some concerns need a doctor’s examination or other medical care before physiotherapy can be considered.
